"Technology can become the 'wings' that will allow the educational world to fly farther and faster than ever before—if we will allow it." - Jenny Arledge
What is technology integration? According to an article published by Edutopia, "Technology integration is the use of technology resources -- computers, mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, digital cameras, social media platforms and networks, software applications, the Internet, etc. -- in daily classroom practices, and in the management of a school." There are a number of ways to integrate technology in the classroom, as well as several factors to consider. The use of technology in the classroom should be supplemental and intentional. View the documentary below for an introduction to technology integration in the classroom
As previously stated, technology should be integrated in the classroom with intentionality. To accomplish this task, there are several different frameworks that serve as models for educators when they are looking to integrate technology in their curriculum. The degree to which technology is integrated correlates to exactly what one hopes to accomplish by integrating technology. Do you wish to create new and significantly learning opportunities, or do you wish to only enhance the learning experience? The presentation below details several of these frameworks further.
When integrating technology into the curriculum, not only should educators provide opportunities for students to meet the academic standards required for their grade level, but educators should strive for their students to also meet the standards established by ISTE. According to ISTE, the "Standards for Students are designed to empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process of exploration, creativity and discovery no matter where they are or their teachers are in the thoughtful integration of ed tech." Achieving these standards can be seamlessly integrated into the current curriculum if done so with intentionality. View the video below for more information on the ISTE Standards for Students.
With that information in mind, let's take a look at two case studies and summaries below, as well as the discussion that follows.
Now, what about classroom management? How does that work with technology integration?
I'm glad you asked! Take a look at the presentation below for a better explanation on classroom management and technology.
The final step to integrating technology in curriculum is lesson planning. One of the most widely used framework for lesson planning at the elementary level is the UbD Framework. According to ASCD, "The Understanding by Design framework (UbD Framework) offers a planning process and structure to guide curriculum, assessment, and instruction. Its two key ideas are contained in the title: 1) focus on teaching and assessing for understanding and learning transfer, and 2) design curriculum 'backward' from those ends." So what does a UbD lesson plan look like? Take a look at the example below.
